CONSULTATION SERVICES - UNSOLVED CASES

Forensic Case Review:

Examination of case file information including police reports; victimology; witness statements; crime scene photographs, sketches, videotapes; forensic and medical reports, etc. in order to advise investigators on additional forensic testing that can be done in the case, to assist in developing investigative strategies, etc.

Equivocal Death Analysis:

Provide an opinion regarding the manner of death based on a thorough review and examination of the case information and the physical evidence.  This is done in cases where the manner of death (accident, suicide, or homicide) is in question.  This analysis involves reviewing case reports, witness statements, death scene characteristics and photographs, autopsy report, victimology, etc.

Crime Scene Analysis / Investigation and Evidence Reconstruction:

Travel to crime scene to 1) search for and document physical evidence and 2) evaluate and assess the physical and behavioral evidence for the purpose of event and scenario recreation.

Criminal Profiling:

Generate a behavioral profile of an unknown offender based on examination of 1) offense characteristics, 2) crime scene reports, diagrams, photographs, 3) police reports, 4) victimology, 5) physical evidence, 6) crime laboratory reports, 7) autopsy reports; etc.  Also known as criminal investigative analysis, profiling is an investigative tool that can provide insight into the behavioral characteristics and traits of an unknown offender as exhibited throughout the crime scene(s).  It is systematic method for analyzing the offender’s verbal and physical behavior in order to provide investigators with insight into the personality of offenders who commit violent and sexual crimes.  Profiling is suitable for single-incident or serial crime cases involving one or more victims.  Types of cases suitable for profiling include homicide, rape, kidnapping, arson, bombings, threat, stalking, etc.  Profiling can also be a valuable tool for prioritizing suspects in multiple-suspect cases.  In serial offender cases, behavioral profiling can be combined with geographic profiling to understand the offender’s hunting behavior and victim selection process which can help focus an investigation towards the offender’s residence or other significant anchor point (workplace, etc.)  Investigators will be provided a written report containing the behavioral profile of the offender(s), a victimological assessment, suggestions for additional forensic evidence testing, and a set of investigative and interview strategies.

Bloodstain Pattern Analysis:

Examination of bloodstain patterns to determine the relationship and relevance of these bloodstains to 1) the crime scene, 2) other physical evidence 3) the individuals involved and 4) to the reported facts of the case.  Bloodstain pattern analysis involves visual examination and characterization of bloodstains based on their size, shape, and distribution pattern.  This analysis can help determine the sequence of actions and events at a crime scene and reveal such information as point of origin of the blood, position and movement of individuals and objects during bloodshed, repositioning of bodies or objects, order of events, etc.

Bloodstain pattern analysis can be performed by re-visiting the crime scene and/or reviewing case information such as 1) police reports, witness statements, forensic reports, and autopsy findings; 2) crime scene diagrams, photographs, and/or videotapes; 3) evidence photographs generated by scene and crime laboratory personnel; 4) the actual physical evidence from the crime scene and from those persons involved in the incident.

Investigative Strategies:

Generate a pro-active plan of action based on a review and examination of the forensic and behavioral evidence, offense characteristics, victimology, crime scene characteristics, etc.

Forensic Testing Recommendations:
Suggestions for additional testing of the physical evidence based on a review of the forensic reports, types of evidence items collected, offense characteristics, etc.
